According to the Maryland State Police, the fatal accident happened Saturday evening, August 29, 2026, on southbound I-270 just south of Democracy Boulevard in Bethesda. Troopers responded to the scene at approximately 6:46 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision.

Police identified the victims as Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, of Burke, Virginia, and her daughter, Areebah Jahin, 23, of Alexandria, Virginia. The two women were passengers in a Toyota Camry when they were involved in the fatal collision.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a Ford Mustang was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-270 when it collided head-on with the Toyota. Begum and Jahin died as a result of the crash.

The Toyota’s 62-year-old male driver and an 8-year-old girl who was also inside the vehicle were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the Mustang was also hospitalized following the collision.
